Feeling Floral Magazine
A magazine for people who freakin’ love flowers! This magazine was a semester long project where I conceptualized an idea for a magazine, created all visual content and layouts, and outsourced articles for written content. The magazine is centered around flowers, their meaning, uses, and provides a space to admire and appreciate their beauty.

I worked on this magazine in phases.
Phase 1: proposal and gathering articles, cover design, illustration feature
Phase 2: photo and found object features, departments
Phase 3: endpapers, table of contents, revision + refinement, creating a digital flipbook
Throughout the process I got feedback from my professor and peers to improve my work and was also encouraged to take creative risks and perfect my designs.
The cover and table of contents
For the cover I had a clear creative vision: I wanted a girl peering out from a bouquet surrounded by floral imagery. Luckily my sister is a great model, so we did a photo shoot and got lots of different options. For the back cover I wanted something simpler so I masked out photos of flowers and placed them almost like stickers. My table of contents is called “Seedling” and the page numbers act as seeds that sprout the different headers. Each flower color also matches the article it belongs to.
Illustration Feature
My illustration feature is about the language of flowers. This article worked well for illustration since I couldn’t be sure I would be able to find and take photos of all these different types of flowers. I drew all the flowers by tracing over images in procreate and then adding in color with brushes I bought that mimic color pencils. I sectioned out the article by having an introduction and then laying out the spreads so that each flower section had its corresponding flower illustration.
Photography Feature
The photography feature highlights the Carlsbad Flower Fields, a place full of flowers in the springtime. I visited the flower fields a total of four times to get a variety of content and capture the flowers at different points in the bloom cycle. It was beautiful every time I visited. This feature has a lot of full photo spreads to let the imagery shine
Found Object Feature
For my found object feature I found an article about arranging flowers. The visuals start as flowers on their own, but by the end they form a full bouquet! I also played with gradients behind the flowers as an element for this feature.
Departments
Feeling Floral has three departments:
Totally Topiary - highlights unique topiaries, this issue is about the topiaries at Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival.
Sprinkle Self-care - talks about different ways flowers can be used for self-care.
Flower Feature - showcases different flowers, this issue talks about sunflowers!
The departments are designed with similar elements so they can be easily identified.
Endpapers
The endpapers consist of floral imagery as one would expect. A majority of them are photography but there are some illustrations as well that play off of the flower imagery. Basically I went through my now large database of flower images and picked ones that I really loved but didn’t get the chance to use elsewhere.
